It was as predicted. The Republic just couldn’t hold out to the multitalented Spanish side and they lost 4-0 as a result. On paper it looks comprehensive and it was. What a terrible performance from the Irish who certainly helped with an inept defensive effort.
Fernando Torres is back amongst the goals. He scored two good efforts but again question marks over the defence and goal keeper Shay Given. Given produced some great saves but he was also poor for some of the goals. The first certainly was one he could have done better with.
Either way the Republic were never going to beat Spain and that was that. They are now out of the Championships and for me question marks now have to be asked about the coach. Giovanni Trapatonni. Two of the midfield giants from the Republic don’t have a club while the likes of Darren Gibson, a Premiership player is lost in the ether out there. Seamus Coleman is another along with Rory De Lapp. I know they would not have prevented this result but should he not at least be looking for his better players to play.
I did predict a 3-0 scoreline but not four. The last goal from Fabregas was well taken but if you allowed it in on a Saturday morning in a local league you would not be best pleased.
Roy Keane was scathing in his attack on the Irish and got rightly angry when too much emphasis was placed on the fans staying and singing their hearts out. They were immense but as Keane pointed out they just “don’t come for the sing song they want to win”.
The Republic are out and that’s only correct. They weren’t and aren’t good enough for this level. The last match is against Italy and it’s all about pride. Don’t expect a win there either.
What a Champions League final we have in prospect. The Germans invade Wembley for one of the most eagerly awaited games in sometime as favourites Bayern Munich take on rivals Borussia Dortmund in a game that easily go either way. Bayern are the tip but Dortmund will not feel intimidated at all. True, Bayern are unbeaten against them in their last four meetings but for me there is something about this Dortmund team.
Bayern have super players like Ribery and Robben who would love to turn on the style in London. Dortmund have the likes of Lewandowski, Hummels and for me one of the stars of their run Gundogan in the middle of the park. What a battle that will be against Martinez. Dortmund have another match winner in Marco Reus. 18 goals last season with Monchengladbach saw him move to Bayern and just keep going. He has scored against the likes of Madrid, Ajax, Man City and Malaga. One to watch.
Over 90 minutes Bayern are 4/5 with Dortmund on offer at 18/5 and a draw 13/5. To win it outright Dortmund are 2/1 with Bayern 2/5. Bayern are the team to beat but there’s something about Dortmund. I’m going to tip them to cause an upset. Either way I think we are all in for a Wembley treat come this weekend.

This season he led Malaga to the quarter finals of the Champions League and they were unlucky to lose out to Borussia Dortmund. In his time he has also coached at Real Madrid and Villarreal. He will take charge of Malaga for the last time this Sunday. After that its Malaga to Manchester.

Ever since the draw was made this is the game everyone has been talking about. Since their All Ireland success Donegal have had a poor enough league. Patchy form saw them relegated on the final day whilst Tyrone went on to play in the league final losing narrowly to Dublin. On reflection it was a game Tyrone should have won.
