No matter what the scandal, John Terry certainly has a knack of coming up smelling of roses. He has been cleared of racial abuse, just the latest in a long line of controversial decisions to go his way.. He will be able to concentrate on football matters with Chelsea now, but I think it would be a mistake for Roy Hodgson to reappoint him as England captain, as some people are suggesting. He should just be relieved he got off and keep his head down from now on.
It was a day to salute some great names in the Premiership as another season finished. Pride of place goes to Alex Ferguson who made his final farewell to the fans after an incredible 5-5 draw with West Brom. What a way to finish and sign off. The fans of both teams were on their feet at the end to proclaim the end of an era.
Also in the mix was Paul Scholes. For me one of the great players of the modern era. No rubbish with Scholes just honest football. A player who had all the skills except he just didn’t know how to tackle. He was special.
Also calling it a day one of the all time greats of the game. Jamie Carragher was a special player in every sense of the world. He has graced the game at Anfield and all over and he too is a credit to himself and to sport. Another former Liverpool and United player also called it a day with Michael Owen calling time on what was a superb career. Add in the tears of the brilliant Beckham and it was a weekend when we saw the end of several of the great stars of the game. Tears from David Beckham would be expected. Then again I would expect that from a genuine sportsperson and that it what he is.
They will all be missed. Let’s just hope some of the new rising stars can leave the same sort of professional legacy they have left in the sport when they decide to call it quits. You wonder.
